Childhood Games

Do you remember when you were a kid? At time when you always having fun? Hha... it sure brings a lot of memories. Some years ago when i was a kid, I used to play some traditional games. Games which giving me impression really deep that can't be erased easily in my mind. And I want to share it with you guys.
One of them is "Hide and Seek". Hha... even it's just kind of simple game that you hide and your friend is go seek, but it have memories within. If I would play this game, I'm prefer to Hide. Coz find a best place to hide so that no one would found you, is awesome. More like searching on treasure, depend on how valuable is it.
In my Hide and Seek variant, that is in Indonesia country which I live right now. To choose who would become the Seeker, It using such a hand sign that we call " Suit ". The rule is, the winner of " Suit " is the one who make the exact hand sign based on the command. And the winner is going to be hide. If the are 4 people, name A,B,C,D and start to " Suit ", one of them is saying the words, that is ' Banyak, Saketek, or Surang '. As the words is spoken, they all start to make a hand sign. Hand sign in here, is divided in two. First is your palm hand, and second is your back palm hand. If 'A' is saying 'Banyak', you have to make a hand sign, just choose one of those option. And the result depend on how many are the same side of hands. If 'B-C-D' are palm hand, and 'A' is back palm hand, 'B-C-D' is deserve to be the winner, and 'A' is the loser which is being the Seeker. If 'A' is saying 'Saketek', that means it count base on the fewer hand sign. And 'Surang' means it count based on the one who did the different sign ( 'A' did the palm hand and the rest did the back palm hand )
When the Seeker is set, next is determine the Time Set. How many should be counts before he try to Seek. To do this, we usually make him to look at the back and I touch his back with only one of my finger. And he have to choose, what finger that was. There's 10 fingers, every wrong choice is count 10 second. And it stops when he choose the right finger. If he was choose the right finger at the first time, he should only get 10 second to count.
When he try to count, he close his eyes with his hand on the wall. He would say it loud " One... Two... Three..." so that everyone else would hear what he's saying, and could predict the right timing to find a place as fast as we could. And if it's done, he could've try to find everyone. Just like a Cat try to found a mouse.
If he looking for it in the left, and I was in the right side of him. I would've run as fast as I can, go through the wall where he was counted, touch it and say  " Mancik-Mancik ", doing this mean I have been win, and won from the cat. So that I'll have just to wait until all the Mouse gather, which is save or not. And when the mouse are gather, we would make a line behind the back of the Cat, He would say the number 1-4 (depend on how many people are playing). If he say 4, that mean number four is going to be the Seeker or the Cat exactly. But, If number 4 is been save before by touched the wall, that mean he is not going to be the Cat and the line is reshuffled. If the Seeker is guessing the saved mouse three times, he is going to be the Cat again.
Hhaa... remembering those memories sure is nostalgic. I'm remember when I was cheating on the game. When the Seeker is counting, I was standing behind him. So, if he finish counting the number, I immediately put my hand on the wall. Of course, he shocked after my cheating action. Hhaa... but that was really fun.

" Donal Bebek ", one of my unforgettable game. Kinda funny game. It can be play by 3 or more people. It would be better to be play by many people, sort of 8 people.
First of all, the game's start by gathering together and make such a circle. Say " Donal Bebek mundur 3 langkah.... 1... 2... 3... " together at once. As you say the words, move to the back along with the number " 1.. 2.. 3.. ". When all done, everyone have to make a " Suit ". And find one person which is win the " Suit ". The winner is going to move their feet and step on the other foot. Just one foot can be allowed to be stepped on. To do this, you're going have to jump over the foot target. Only one jump can be done. Next jump isn't allowed to be done. And, for the people except the winner. Same as the winner, they only have one action to be done, only one jump. As the winner is jump, the others are allowed to jump instead. If the winner is not moving yet, the others are not allowed to jump.
When the action is been done, If it's step on other foot, that means that foot owner isn't allowed to join the game anymore or it's game over for him. And if it's not step on the other foot, Make a " Suit " again until one person is left.
Hha... I miss this game so much. Can't even stop to play this game, long ago. Waiting for the step action sure is making such a fast heartbeat. So many thoughts come, waiting for the step attack. Awesome.

Talking about fun games, I have been played such a strength using game. Call " Arm Wrestling ". Hhaa... I can guess it's familiar already. Who doesn't know arm wrestling anyway? Even though it suppose to be adult game, but me and my friends is trying to do the same game. Strength testing, is our first motivation on doing arm wrestling. Long ago, all the boys in my class ever having such this strength test. And find who is the strongest person in the class. But, even it's just class competition, the winner is act like he's the strongest person in the world. Hha.. to make it clear that winner is me, lol. Since I was a kid, I'm always thinking of something big, something that only me the only person who got it. Such an arrogant kid I am, am I? Hha... Maybe so. But, that's a long time ago...
Arm wrestling is kind of sport that participated by two person face to face. Each participant only allowed to use one hand as a weapon, either right arm or left arm, depend on which one is the strongest arm, but both player is using the same arm. Each participant places one arm on a surface with their elbows bent and touching the surface, and they grip each other's hand. The goal is to pin the other's arm onto the surface, with the winner's arm over the loser's arm.
Various factors can play a part in one's success in arm wrestling. Technique and overall arm strength are the two greatest contributing factors to winning an arm wrestling match. Other factors such as the length of an arm wrestler's arm, his/her muscle and arm mass/density, hand grip size, wrist endurance and flexibility, reaction time, as well as countless other traits, can add to the advantages of one arm wrestler over another.
And for the fact, I'm never thought of such of this thing when I was a kid on doing an Arm Wrestling. I mean, what kind of kid who would've think such a thing? Power is anything, who need such a theory? I'm still remember I thought of such a thing.
In my late class, not only the boys having an arm wrestling. Even the girls are join in. No offense, but the girls are powerless facing the boys. Their arm just too soft to gripping. But, not all the girls are this powerless, there's a girl who can even beat all the boys. Man, she's so strong. Unfortunately I'm forgot what's her name, but this girl is amazing. Beat so many boys including me on Arm Wrestling, wow... What does she eat? Muscle?

Even this game is fun, but who knows it would cause such a Injury, or else it would become even bad. So, try to play this game on a safe way and prevent anything that would cause any problem.
For just an information of the Arm Wrestling Associated Injury,

Arm wrestling puts enormous torque/twist on the upper arm's humerus bone to a degree seen in few other physical activities. Most people's bones are not accustomed to being significantly stressed in this direction, and injuries can occur surprisingly easily. The arm typically fails because of a diagonal break at or below the midpoint between the shoulder and the elbow.
The natural tendency of an inexperienced arm wrestler is to push the hand, wrist, and shoulder in the same coordinated direction, against the force being applied by the opponent. This is how we throw a baseball or hit a tennis ball.
However, turning one's shoulder this way simply adds to the torque already being applied to the humerus by the opponent. US Arm Sports advises of the danger of "letting your shoulder get inside your hand." It is better to pivot your shoulders so that you never look away from your hand.
If the tendons and ligaments are too weak to support the pressure, the muscles can cause a complete tendon blow (pop). However, tendons can be strengthened with many methods. When tendons are in pain, they require blood so they can heal faster. Doctors and arm wrestlers recommend doing rehab (training/therapy, exercising with light weights and many repetitions for 30 – 45 minutes non-stop to pump the blood into arms). Tendons can get bigger with time, although it can be a slow process.Experienced arm wrestlers may have tendons 2 - 4 times bigger than average people.

" Kelereng " or marbles to the western world, is a favorite with boys. Exciting games. There are many variations of games played with marbles.
One of the more popular versions is that a small circle is drawn on the ground. All the players put one of their marbles within the circle. Then each of the players drops another marble to a point outside of the drawn circle. The player that owns the marble furthest away from the circle is entitled to play first.
He must attempt to use the marble that is outside of the circle (striker) to hit the marbles within the circle and knock them outside of the ring. If he is successful in doing, this he is entitled to keep the marbles that he has knocked out of the circle. The striker marble, however, must also come to rest outside of the drawn circle. If it does not, this marble must remain within the circle and the owner then forfeits this marble.
If the player is successful in knocking one of his opponents' marbles out of the ring, he can continue his turn and try to strike any other opponents. striker marbles. If he is successful in hitting his opponents. striker marble, he is entitled to take that marble and his opponent can no longer play the current round. If however he misses his opponents. striker marble, he looses his turn and the next player can then start to play.

" Layang-Layang " or kite flying is a very popular pastime for Indonesian children. Provinces throughout the country have their own designs. There are two distinct types of kites: the first is those that are just to be used for flying which have a tailed attached to them to balance the kite; and those that will be used for one-on-one dogfights, a favorite pastime amongst kite flyers.
Fighting kites do not have tails attached to them. They are made from light bamboo and waxed paper. Often the string that is attached to these kites is coated with crushed glass. The string is dipped in a solution of crushed glass, which has been boiled with ka, chemicals and dye. The mixture acts as an adherent so the tiny particles of glass will cling to the string. The string is strung out on a small rack to let it dry. This process makes the string very sharp and capable of cutting the opponents string.
Ready-made glass coated string can also be bought in various thickness. . Most kite flyers opt to buy ready-made string as it is a long and messy process to prepare their own. The choice of the thickness of the string would depend the on the size of the kite, and a greater consideration, the budget of the buyer. If the owner is not careful this string can also cut his fingers as well!
The object of the game is to try and cut the opponents' kite loose. The way that the string is attached to the kite determines the control that the flyer has over his kite. If the two holding strings are attached far apart to the frame of the kite, this will make it heavier to hold on to when it is flying. However, this gives the kite flyer greater control over the movements of the kite.
If the two holding strings are attached closer together onto the frame of the kite, this makes the kite much lighter to hold on to but sacrifices control. These kites tend to be wilder in flight.
Experienced kite flyers know that a taunt string is not as easy to cut as a slack string, so it is up to the skill of the kite flyer to use techniques of pulling and releasing the string to try and avoid having his kite cut free. If a kite is cut free by an opponent, the victor is the one that is still holding a kite. The loose kites are often the culprits of reckless chases. The child that gets to the loose kite first is considered the new owner of the kite.

Guess we'll have to stop this journey, and I hope to share it some other time.
Hope this memories still last as the flow of time.
